Unforgettable Experience
In Jan 2025, I did a 6 day hike in the Dahar region with Wildyness, with the lead guide Omar. It included 7 nights accommodation on the hike, plus 3 nights in Dar Diafa in Al Riyad, Djerba at the beginning before I met Omar. The adventure started with a private transfer from Djerba to Matmata for one night in Hotel Les Berberes which had a very nice underground room in beautiful recently renovated underground hotel with great dinner and breakfast in Old Matmata. The next day we did a fun hike to the beautiful village of Tamazret with a visit to Cafe Berbere when we got there for some very nice almond tea and fresh baked flat bread with olive oil and honey and a visit to Musee de Berbere Tamazret for a great tour and information. Then we drove to Zmerten to stay one night at Dar Zmerten with a very friendly family and home cooked meal on a chilly night sitting around the meal on cushions and the kids were so cute. The next day I hiked from Zmerten to Toujane with local guide Ali who is the owner of the questhouse, and he also showed me his museum, and drove me up on his motor bike to the highest mountain in the region. Then we drove to Zammour at the end of the day to spend two nights at Auberge Saber in a very fun underground bedroom with very tasty home cooked food. I thought this was a really fun place to stay and that Saber was a great host. We did two hikes here, one to Ksar Hallouf and back to Zammour on the first day, and a one from Zammour to Qasr al Jawami the second day -with a stop at an operating olive press for a taste test and a tour- both days were with the local guide Ayman who was an excellent guide, who brought very tasty lunches and was very knowledgeable about plants and horticulture, plus a great hiker. After that, we drove to Ksar Hadada and I stayed two nights stay in the the Ksar come hotel there which was very cool as they filmed the phantom menace there, plus there was the real town with a beautiful mosque as well. From Ksar Hadada, we did a hike to Ghomrassen on the first day which was Omars home town and a beautiful hike with dinosaur footprints, cave drawings, and even a stop for some local sweets. The next day we drove to Chenini for a hike from Chenini to Douiret, followed by a night at Gite Douiret - Chez Raouf which was also very nice, with good food, and a fun cave room in amazing ancient village which was a great place to watch the sunset from. This was sadly the end of the hike, and the next morning we did a private transfer to Douz. Overall, this was a very fun and amazing experience. Omar was a great guide, who handled all of the driving and logistics of arranging the hikes and grabbing my luggage before and after the hikes from the guesthouses, and provided the actual hiking guiding on the days where a local guide wasn't mentioned above. Even the driving through all of the mountains was very beautiful and fun. Omar was very knowledgeable about all of the history and stories of the area, and all of the guesthouses and hotels were very fun to stay at and unique. The food on the whole trip was amazing, breakfasts, lunches, dinners. I would say this was one of the coolest hikes I have ever done because of the combination of the fun hiking plus the local cultural immersion. The logistical assistance was greatly appreciated, as this would have been really hard to plan on my own. Hopefully more people can choose this itinerary as it was very nice and I highly recommend it. I would love to come back and do it again, inshallah!
