Key Information
We arrive in Algiers, where we’re greeted at the airport and transferred to a boutique hotel in the heart of the city. After some time to rest and settle in, we take a relaxed stroll through the neighborhood—soaking in the Mediterranean light and colonial architecture.
In the evening, we gather for a welcome dinner at Le Tajine, a traditional restaurant in the old town, known for its rich couscous.
After breakfast, we head into the Casbah to explore its maze of alleys, courtyards, and centuries-old houses that reflect the spirit of Algiers. The walk continues to the Mustapha Pacha Palace, an Ottoman-era residence known for its mosaics and carved ceilings. Around midday, we take a break for lunch with a sea view, before carrying on to discover more of the city’s history and architecture.
After breakfast, we drive along the scenic coastal road to Cherchell, once a Roman capital known as Caesarea. Then we continue to Tipaza, where temples and theaters lie just steps from the Mediterranean.
After lunch at a seaside restaurant like Le Dauphin, we have the option to go kayaking or horseback riding.
In the evening, we head back to Algiers for our flight south to Djanet, the gateway to the Sahara.
We wake in Djanet and enjoy a Tuareg-style breakfast—flatbread, honey, dates, and strong tea—before boarding 4×4 vehicles for an expedition into the desert.
Our day takes us through the Tassili n’Ajjer National Park, where we see prehistoric rock engravings like the “Crying Cow,” visit palm-lined gueltas, and pause for tea in oasis landscapes.
In the evening, we arrive at our desert camp in Erg Admer, where we enjoy dinner and Tuareg music under the stars.
After breakfast, we set out on a morning hike across the Tassili Plateau (3–4 hours, moderate), where thousands of ancient cave paintings reveal stories of prehistoric life.
We stop for a picnic lunch with sweeping views of the desert below, then return to Djanet for a free evening. Those who wish can join a small, informal gathering to experience live Tuareg music.
In the morning, we visit Djanet’s local artisans and take part in a forge or a leather workshop before stopping at the market to browse for spices, jewelry, and Tuareg crafts.
In the evening, we fly back to Algiers and return to our hotel. Dinner is free for us to explore on our own or with new friends.
We begin our day with a visit to Notre-Dame d’Afrique, a beautiful basilica overlooking the sea, followed by a walk through the lush and historic Hamma Botanical Gardens.
After lunch at a local favorite like L'auberge du Dragonnier, we visit the Martyrs’ Monument, an iconic symbol of Algerian independence. Those interested can explore contemporary design galleries or sip coffee at a nearby café with a view.
This morning, we head east into the Kabyle Mountains of Béjaïa, where we’re welcomed into a local village for a home-cooked lunch—think couscous, taguella, and seasonal fruits.
Later, we continue towards a coastal city surrounded by cliffs and forests. We drive to Cap Carbon, home to one of the highest lighthouses in the world, and enjoy the views at Pic des Singes, where Barbary macaques roam freely.
After an early breakfast, we make our way to Djémila, one of North Africa’s most remarkable Roman archaeological sites. We explore the site its forum, temples and mosaic-rich houses, and visit the Museum of Mosaics nearby.
After a peaceful lunch in a rustic auberge or a scenic picnic, we drive east to Constantine, where we check into our hotel for the night.
Today we explore Constantine, dramatically perched over deep gorges. We cross the Sidi M’Cid Bridge, suspended over 175 meters above the valley floor, and visit the elegant Palace of Ahmed Bey with its frescoed halls and tranquil courtyards.
We also visit the Emir Abdelkader Mosque, one of Algeria’s largest and most significant religious sites.
Lunch is at a panoramic restaurant overlooking the city’s dramatic cliffs.
We begin with a drive to Timgad, the grand Roman city known for its stunning grid layout and structures like Trajan’s Arch, the Capitoline Temple, and the library.
After our guided tour, we head to Batna for lunch, before catching our evening flight back to Algiers. We spend our final night in a hotel near the airport.
Depending on our flight times, we may enjoy a relaxed breakfast at Bab Dzira or Bastion 23 café.
We then transfer to the airport with a suitcase full of memories—and perhaps a few handmade treasures from the journey.
