Overview

Did you know that the fishermen of Kerkennah use special fishing techniques? Certain traditional techniques are exclusively learned and used in the archipelago due to its unique natural properties.

Learn these techniques and catch your own fish by accompanying a fisherman on his traditional boat!

This sea trip is both fun and beneficial. She will teach you more about the history of fishing in the archipelago. The techniques that you will learn with the fisherman are:

Fishing with "Drina"

The traps are placed in front of the ebb so that by going upstream, the fish rushes into the openings that it meets.

Fishing with "Charfia"

charfiya or chrafi is a traditional fishing method dating back centuries and practiced by fishermen in Kerkennah

Fishing with Damassa

This technique is available depending on the season. The principle consists of horizontally spreading a net supported on the surface of the water by floats.

Book your experience and spend 3 hours in the sea with your fisherman who explains all these techniques to you. You will also have the opportunity to try these techniques yourself in order to learn them!

This is a sunrise experience. Our partner will be waiting for you at 4:15am

Learn Fishing Techniques in Kerkennah

What a fantastic morning, spent in the company of fisherman, Ghazi, as he explained traditional fishing techniques of Kerkenneh Islands and life in general on the island. While it was a struggle to wake up so early, the amazing light and beautiful calm of the sunrise made it so worthwhile. Ghazi also works as a teacher and is patient and friendly as he explains the traditional fishing culture on Kerkenneh, which is a historic cultural intangible practice. We went fishing for mullet but also caught sbaras (small fish) and crab. (He also explained that one crab, which originated from outside Tunisia is known as "daesh" (ISIL) as it eats/kills many fish who would normally have their grounds on the waters around Kerkenneh. If you want to really understand the culture and lifestyle of Kerkenneh, this tour is a must. Highly recommended! (Just make sure you organise transport to the meeting point...not easy at that time of day, and not easy in general on the island, where there are few transport options).
